READING IN BAOBAB'S SHADOW

WHY
The project intends to promote the right to reading as a tool for the protection of human dignity and the development of democratic processes and in order to guarantee children a lifestyle that protects their cultural identity, the right to education as foreseen by the Declaration of Rights of the Child
WHO
To read under the baobab will be the 41 children and young guests of the orphanage. Their age varies between 7 and 17 years.
HOW
The project aims to equip the Mwangaza Orphanage with a small library that allows 41 guests easy access to reading books in English and Swahili, digital culture, and listening to music. The project consists in the realization of a small library obtained from a classroom currently being completed.
The library will also be a place for aggregation and promotion of culture. Specifically, the project requires:
- purchase of shelving, shelves and trolleys by local artisans;
- purchase of tables for consulting books;
- purchase of 1 computer with related peripherals for the creation of a computer station;
- provision of books in English and Swahili, music CDs, computer software;
- carrying out a training course for the Mwangaza library manager, supported by one or two of the Orphanage's older children.
The library will be divided into two areas: one for children aged 4 to 10 with texts dedicated to them and one for all children up to 17 years. The classroom that will be used as a library will be colored and furnished with furniture and colorful objects in order to create a pleasant environment for children.
